The RAP video team in action.
In late 2004 a small video project was undertaken with young people from the Cowley area of East Oxford. Through the organisation RAP (Right Angle Productions) the participants were given the opportunity to learn camera, interview and basic production skills and to use their new abilities to explore the project theme, in this case the theme chosen was 'community'.
The group came together once a week for a two-hour session, and within eight weeks of workshops and shooting trips with the camera they had created this film. Taking the camera out onto the Cowley Road - an incredibly diverse and energetic corner of Oxford - and armed with a series of questions the group had formulated, the group set about the formidable task of trying to understand what a community means to most people and how they would like to see it improved.
During workshops and playback sessions the group made decisions on how to edit the final film. At the same time as the video project was running, RAP also organised a music project where young people were given the chance to create their own pieces of music, once again exploring the theme of 'community' Their footage was edited by the project facilitator and using the other group's music the final film was completed.
